평범한 사람들이 정치인을 자진해서 후원하고 싶은 생각이 별로 안드는게 사실이지요. 가끔씩 대중의 지지를 받는 사람들이 나타나는데, 대단한 사람이지요. 민주주의는 다수결의 원칙이 존재하고, 그 다수가 투표를 한다면 잘 안될수가 없겠지요. 그런데 민주주의는 자본주의와 함께 변화하면서 다수가 아니라 소수가 거대한 자본을 가지고 지배하는 세상으로 바뀌고 있지요. 샌더스가 이런 세상을 바꿔줄수 있을까요?

• Cara Delevingne only joined the Highest-Paid Models ranking in 2014 but she has already skyrocketed to the top thanks to a busy year of modeling, acting–and instagramming. Her earnings leaped to $9 million from $3.5 million last year.

• Taylor Swift’s BFF appeared in campaigns for 13 different brands, shooting major adverts with DKNY, Burberry and Topshop and retaining a money-making beauty deal with YSL. After a brief part in 2012′s Anna Karenina, 2015’s Paper Towns was the first in a spate of forthcoming films from Delevingne, who is pivoting from the page to the multiplex.

• The 23-year-old is soon set to appear in London Fields with Johnny Depp, Pan with Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried, and Suicide Squad, with Will Smith and Jared Leto. • Banking $9 million thanks to recent deals with Maybelline and Vogue Eyewear, Lima clocks her largest paycheck ever this year. With 5.4 million Instagram followers, 2.1 Twitter followers and 6 million Facebook followers, she is one of the most visible supermodels.The Brazilian also swept the small screen in this year’s SuperBowl, starring in a Kia ad.

• Dutch powerhouse Doutzen Kroes may no longer be modeling for Victoria’s Secret–scheduling conflicts reportedly prevent her from fulfilling the lingerie line’s demanding time commitments–but she still makes a pretty penny from a lucrative L’Oréal cosmetics contract.

• The face of Tiffany & Co., she also shills for Samsung in her native Netherlands and stars in a steamy Calvin Klein fragrance ad. The 30-year-old has her own line of cashmere sweaters which she regularly promotes to her 3.4 million Instagram followers and 1.7 million Facebook fans.

• Natalia Vodianova spritzes for two fragrances: Calvin Klein Euphoria, which she first sprayed on in 2006, and Guerlain Shalimar Souffle de Parfum. Her earnings jumped to $7 million from $4 million last year. She also clocks in a Guerlain cosmetics contract and designs a line for European lingerie makers Etam. The 33-year-old Russian is the face of Stella McCartney and Theory.

• As the face of Wonderbra, the former Victoria’s Secret Angel is still finding lingerie lucrative. Banking $5.5 million, Kerr made slightly less than 2014’s $7 million but plumped her paycheck as the face of Escada Joyful Fragrance, Swarovski jewelry and Clear Hair care products.

• With 7 million Instagram followers, 4 million Twitter followers and 7.4 million Facebook fans, she is one of the most prominent models on social media. The 32-year-old also has a cosmetics line, Kora Organics, which she launched in 2009; fans can also drink from a Kerr-endorsed teacup she released for Royal Albert. She is recently divorced from actor Orlando Bloom and has one child.

• Joan Small’s busy 12 months accounts for her increase in earnings from $3 million in 2014 to $5.5 million this year. She retained lucrative Estée Lauder and H&M deals while adding nearly a dozen new brands to her roster including ads with Joe Fresh, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs. She also continues to walk more catwalks than most other models on the highest-paid list. The Puerto Rican 27-year-old is the first Latina ambassador for Estée Lauder. She has 1.1 million Instagram followers.

샌더스의 공약중 하나는 미국의 거대은행을 잘개 쪼개야 한다는 것입니다. 누구에게는 완전 빨갱이지요.

미국의 거대 은행이 Too big to fail이어서 미국시민의 피같은 돈으로 살려놨더니 이제는 더 커져서 더 문제가 생겼다는 이야기를 합니다. 어떤 정치인들도 하지 못한 말을 국민들에게 당당히 하고 있습니다. 왜 다른 사람들은 이런 얘기를 못했던 것일까요. 미국이 자본주의는 이미 가진자들이 자본으로 모든것을 장악할수 있게끔 변해있습니다. 슈퍼팩이라는 선거자금 모금 제도는 무제한으로 돈을 모을수 있습니다.(다른 글 참조) 완전 합법적으로 1%를 위한 선거가 되는 것이지요.

샌더스가 여기서 살아남을 수 있다면 그 만큼 미국은 더 위대해 질수 있겠지요. 여러사람이 현재 떨고있습니다. 최소한 99%는 샌더스 때문에 떨 이유는 없지요.

미국은 경제위기 이후에 중산층 이하가 이미 무너졌습니다. 중산층 이하가 무너지면 다시 균형으로 돌리기에는 어렵지요. 다행인것은 미국에서는 최저임금을 올린다든지 하는 노력이 진행중입니다. 민주당 대선후보중에 버니 샌더스가 인기를 끄는 이유도 결국 경제지요. 전통적 의미의 자본주의는 이미 실패했고 수정자본주의가 계속 나오고 있지요. 미국인들이 사회주의 자본주의를 선택하고 발전시킬지 기대됩니다.

한국에서는 최저임금 올리고 재벌을 규제하고 해체하는 이야기는 빨갱이들이나 하는 이야기지요.

미국의 그늘..노숙자 1만 명 '집단촌'을 가다

밤이건 낮이건 술과 마약에 찌들어 비틀거리는 사람들.

쓰러져 신음해도 누구 하나 관심을 기울이지 않는 곳.

LA 중심가 뒷골목의 '스키드 로우'.

미국에서 가장 큰 노숙자 촌이 바로 이곳에 들어서 있습니다.

스키드 로우에 모여든 노숙자만 어림잡아 1만 명이 넘습니다.

인도마다 즐비하게 늘어선 텐트들은 노숙자 상류층에 속합니다.

대부분은 길바닥에서 담요 한 장으로 겨울밤을 버텨야 합니다.

19살 때 부모를 잃고 5년째 이곳에서 노숙 생활을 하는 한인 청년을 만났습니다.

캘리포니아 주의 노숙자 수는 11만 5천 7백여 명으로 미국 전체 노숙자 수의 20%를 차지합니다.

저유가 시대의 최대수혜주는 항공사이지요. 항공사의 비용중 기름값이 차지하는 비용이 절대적이라 피해가기 힘들지요. 그런데 미국 항공사들은 작년말부터 시작된 국제유가 폭락에도 아직 힘을 많이 못쓰고 있습니다. 가솔린도 많이 떨어졌는데 이해가 잘 안되어 던지고 나왔는데 아직 계속 tracking하고는 있습니다.

미국은 대공황에 버금가는 버블붕괴가 2008년에 있었지요. 대규모 QE로 실업률은 떨어지고 집값을 오르고 경제회복세가 완연하지만 소비가 생각만큼 살고 있지 않고 미국 가계에 중요한 기름값도 아주 좋은 가격으로 떨어졌지만 체감은 크지않다고들 하지요. 이미 회복했거나 더 잘된 사람들은 1%의 가진자라는 사실을 다시한번 일깨워주는 data입니다. 경제붕괴는 중산층 이하에게는 치명적입니다. 살아생전에 회복하기는 어렵다고 보는 것이 맞을겁니다.

국가는 이런 거품이 일어나지도 붕괴되지도 않게 막는게 국가의 의무라는 것을 잊으면 안되겠습니다.

93% of America’s Counties Still Haven’t Recovered from Great Recession

In his valedictory State of the Union address, President Obama declared that, “Anyone claiming that America’s economy is in decline is peddling fiction.” By almost any standard, he’s right. Aside from the silliness of taking credit for “gas under two bucks a gallon,” all the indicators he points to, especially job growth, are moving in the right direction.

It’s worth noting, though, that the recovery from the Great Recession is far from complete and, more importantly, highly uneven.  Indeed, a new study finds, “93% of counties in the U.S. have failed to fully recover.” Eric Morath summarizes for the WSJ:

Nationwide, 214 counties, or 7% of 3,069, had recovered last year to prerecession levels on four indicators: total employment, the unemployment rate, size of the economy and home values, a study from the National Association of Counties released Tuesday found.

The reality is slowing population growth and industry shifts mean some parts of the country will likely never fully recover. But by the end of last year, more counties had not recovered on any one of the four indicators, 16%, than had recovered on all of them.

“Americans don’t live in a single economic place,” said Emilia Istrate, the association’s director of research and outreach and one of the study’s authors. “It tells you why many Americans don’t feel the good economic numbers they see on TV.”

As was the case in 2014, when just 65 counties had fully recovered, most of those that bounced back are in states benefiting from the energy boom. Last year, 72 of the recovered counties were in Texas, the most of any state. Nebraska followed with 22. Minnesota, Kentucky, North Dakota, Montana and Kansas each had at least 10 fully recovered counties.

Meanwhile, in 27 states, not a single county had fully recovered.

Some of the nation’s largest counties finally recovered from the recession in 2015, including the counties containing Denver, San Francisco, San Jose, Dallas and Columbus, Ohio. In 2014, no county with more than 500,000 residents had fully recovered. Last year, 17 of 126 had.

The recovery is spreading out from the energy-rich center of the country—in part because a massive drop in oil prices is reversing job creation there while providing an economic benefit to larger metro areas near the coasts.

Numerous counties on the West Coast, Nevada, New York, Florida and the Carolinas recorded better than 4% economic growth last year, the NACo study found. (The entire country appears to be growing at about a 2% rate.) But a large swath of counties in Texas, Illinois and other states in the middle of the country suffered economic contractions last year.

Now, on the one hand, this is highly misleading. As has been repeatedly noted since the county-by-county voting maps gained popularity during the bitter dispute over the 2000 presidential election results, looking at the country in that way can be very misleading. After all, most counties have very few people living in them while others are highly concentrated. Los Angeles County, California has slightly more than 10 million residents.  That’s more people than live in 41 of the 50 states.  Cook County, Illinois has over 5 million residents, more than all but 22 of the states. A Business Insider piece from a couple years ago noted that half the population of the United States lived in 146 counties out of more than 3000 in the country. Visually, it’s even more stark:

이해할수 없을만큼 완전 투기판으로 전락했습니다. 오늘도 장중 4%가까이 상승해가던 유가가 갑자기 폭락으로 돌변합니다. 누군가 끌어올리고 싶어하는데 당한것 같기도 하지만 하루하루 이해할수 없을정도로 스윙이 큰것이 더이상 시장이 아닌것 같습니다. 이미 누군가는 방향을 정해놓고 아래쪽으로 계속 떠미는것 같기도 합니다. 저는 내려갈곳에 배팅해서 좋은 결과를 봤는데, 이제부터는 완전 투기판이라 개인은 손대지 않는게 좋아보입니다. 들어간다면 손실을 각오해야할 판.

고프로가 결국 몰락으로 한발짝 더 다가섰습니다. 대체로 미국은 연말에 판매가 폭등하는데, 이번 판매가 예상치보다 훨씬 못미쳤다는 소식입니다. 결국 며칠전까지 사람을 왕창 뽑아오던 회사가 갑자기 7%감원까지 발표해서 주식 폭락을 막아보고자 하는것 같습니다. 상장한지 2년도 안되서 이런식으로 회사가 맛탱이 가는것 보면 상장심사를 더 잘해야 한다고 생각됩니다. IPO광품으로 결국 손실보는 사람은 개미들이니까요. 결국 이런 스토리는 상장할때도 이미 나왔던 이야기인데, 투자자 보호가 먼저인지 거품을 만들어서 1%들이나 월스트리트 사람들의 배만 불리는게 좋은지 생각해 봐야할것 같습니다.

오늘 종가는 14.61, 장중에 뉴스가 나오고 25% 이상 폭락한걸 보면 내일 10불을 지키기도 어려워보입니다. 새로 출시할 드론과 새로운 제품들에 기대를 좀 걸고 있었는데 폭락이 문제가 아니라 갑자기 감원을 발표한것 보면 회사가 운명을 다했구나 하는 생각이 듭니다.

나쁜 쉐이들이 확률을 1/292.2M 으로 상당히 어렵게하면서 말도안되게 지난번에도 당첨자가 없었습니다. 계산상으로 지난번 보다 4배나 더 많은 티켓이 팔릴것으로 기대하기때문에 이번에는 꼭 1등이 나오겠지요. 일반적으로 3명이상이 나와야 정상이지요. 이번에도 안나온다다면 정말 이 쉐이들 싹 잡아다 넣아야 합니다. 이런식으로 사행성을 조장하다니.

오늘 뉴스에서 미국인들에게 영화나 연극, 책등의 문화지출을 다 합한것 보다 복권이 더 많이 팔린다고 합니다. 이런 말도안되는 사회로 되어가고 있다는 것에 개탄합니다. 사람들이 좀더 정상적으로 살수 있게 정부 당국은 좀더 규제를 해야할것 같습니다. 좋은 방법중에 하나는 티켓 가격을 1불내지 2불이하로 하고 1/200M 이하의 확률로 1등이 나오는 복권은 허락을 안해준다든지요. 

미국은 연방국가다 보니 어떤 주에 있냐에 따라 세금이 틀립니다. 연방세금이 있고 주별 세금이 있습니다. 이것을 계산하지 못한다면 경제학자도 아니지요. SNS에 유명한 경제학자가 자꾸 미국이 한국보다 세금이 적다고 주장하길래 미국 주세금은 왜 넣지 않는냐, 소비세가 따로 붙는 것은 왜 무시하느냐 등 몇가지 항목에 대해서 얘기를 했더니 그런것을 국가별 비교할때 고려할필요가 없다고 말하는 것을 보고, 저런것들이 경제 정책을 만들고 얘기하니 세상이 어떻게 돌아가겠냐 생각들었던 기억이 있습니다.

아래 기사는 아주 좋은 도표를 많이 가지고 있는데, 복권으로 얻는 불로 소득을 상당히 싫어하는 주도 있는것 같습니다. 소득세는 아래 순서와 많이 다른것 같습니다.

참고로 파워볼을 팔지 않는 주는 6개주나 됩니다. Utah, Nevada, Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi. 이 여섯개 주에는 캘리포니아에 흔한 주복권도 없다고 합니다.
