선두업체중 도요타와 닛산의 약진이 두드러지게 보이네요. 현대도 평균이상의 판매량증가가 돕보입니다. 일본차의 엔저영향이 점점 심해지고 있는 상황인데도 잘하고 있네요. Ford는 힘을 못쓰고. 일본차 중에는 혼다가 부진하네요.

역시 선두권 중에서는 토요타와 닛산이 잘하고 있네요. 엔저로 강력한 마케팅이 도움이 되고 있습니다. 캠리는 부동의 1위지만, 코롤라의 증가가 뛰어납니다. 코롤라가 잘 나온듯 보이네요. 현대중에서는 아반테(Elantra)가 점점 많이 팔리네요. 기름값이 많이 내려간것 생각하면 작은차가 많이 팔리는 상황은 미국 사람들의 라이프 스타일도 변하고 있다고 보여집니다. 포드는 왜그러는지, 혼다도 힘내고. 소나타는 힘을 못쓰는군요. 가격도 많이 내렸는데...

도요타는 20세기에 최고 기술력 정점을 찍고 그 뒤로부터 quality engineering과 marketing에 너무 집중한 case인것 같다. 2000년대초 차들은 정말 잘 만들었는데, LEXUS도 초기에 좋았고. Qulity engineering도 기술이라면 기술력이 너무 좋은듯. 미국 회사들이 망한 이유중에 하나지요. 기술력이 너무 좋아서.

Toyota Engine Excessive Oil Consumption

Owners Are Burning Through 1 Quart of Oil Every 1,200 Miles

An increasing number of Toyotas are experiencing excessive oil consumption which may be the result of defective piston rings. Toyota, in all their deny-til-we-die splendor, is reportedly denying warranty coverage on many oil consumption related problems and telling owners that burning through oil is normal.

Burning the midnight oil in college? That's normal. Burning through a quart of oil in 1,200 miles? Not so much, at least in our book.

The Cause of All the Oil Burning

Even the most judicious oil-changers are reporting issues that probably shouldn't happen. Things like:

• Having your "oil pressure" light come on halfway through your maintance schedule.
• Having you engine burn through as much as 1 quart of oil in 1,200 miles
• Being told that your engine burning through oil is "normal" and "nothing to be alarmed of"
• Having to come back with a damaged, oil-deprived engine only to be denied warranty coverage

Guess which of these is happening to Toyota owners? Go on, I'll give you a minute. (Hint: this is a multi-choice test)

If you guessed all of them, you're absolutely right.

Toyota Issues a TSB

On August 11, 2011, Toyota issued a technical service bulletin (TSB)[1] to dealerships which says:

"Some 2006 – 2011 model year vehicles equipped with the 2AZ-FE engine may exhibit engine oil consumption. The piston assembly has been changed to minimize oil consumption." And that "P030# (cylinder # misfire detected) DTC may also be set as a result of oil consumption."

Unlike a recall, a TSB is basically a set of instructions given to dealership mechanics on repair procedures and warranty information. In this case Toyota says repairs should be covered under the standard Toyota Powertrain Warranty (60 months / 60k miles), but only after a test. The dealer is told to confirm the engine's oil level, mark the dipstick and then advise the customer to drive for 1,200 miles before returning for an inspection. At that time, only engines that are more than 1 quart low will have their warranties honored.

So what about those that are outside the standard powertrain warranty or fail the test? They're left to pickup the bill which can be thousands of dollars. Take it from these folks on CarComplaints.com:

"So after loving my Toyota for many happy years imagine my heartache when it began using oil to the tune of visible loss on dipstick at <100 miles. Having always prided myself on taking car maintenance very seriously and never owning a vehicle less than a decade this one is a total disappointment" -scaredgrammy in Dry Ridge, KY

"At some point around 100,000 miles I was shocked to find little or no oil on the dip stick so I started watching it closely. The car no has 149,000 miles on it and burns a bit more then 1 quart every 1200 miles. This just happens to be the amount that Toyota calls a problem and excessive, BUT our car is out of warranty. Amazing two weeks ago I ask the Toyota service manager about it and he said he never has heard of this … That is a totally false statement since there is a TS bulletin about this problem! Toyota's engineers made an error with the design of the pistons." -pstef in Newton Falls, OH

일본차들이 엔저로 공격적으로 가격을 낮추고 있다고 한것에 이어, 현대도 질수 없겠지요. 샌디에고는 대도시가 아니라 가격이 이 평균이상이라고 보면 될겁니다. 1시간만 LA쪽으로 올라가도 down pay가 반으로도 줄수 있가나, 살때 가격을 더 깍을수 있다는 것을 염두해둬야겠지요.

새차 3년이면 오일말고는 갈어줄게 거의 없으니 maintenance비용이 겁나거나 차 관리하기 어려운 분들에게는 리스는 좋은 딜이죠. 리스가 회사가 남는게 많아요. 리스비용을 받고 리스로 돌려받아 팔아서 남겨먹을수 있고.

소나타(Sonata)를 기준으로 $139에 36개월 deal이 있네요. $2000 down하고요. 3년 총비용이 $7040 + TAX쬐금 정도 되네요. 상당히 좋은데요. 캠리보다 더 공격적이군요. LA에서 구하면 3년에 $6000대에서 구할수 있을것 같네요.

놀라운건 제네시스,

$299 x36 + 2000 = $12764 + tax쬐금으로 리스 3년 총 비용으로 상당히 매력적이네요. 물론 제 형편엔 3년에 만불넘어가면 어려고 10년에 만불이 좋은데 ㅋㅋㅋ.

애플 카의 뉴스를 보며, 애플이 돈되는데 안뛰어 드는게 이상할정도로 당연한 행보로 생각하고 있습니다. 애플이 자동차와 TV시장을 70년대에 정체되어 있다고 define했다고 하는데 TV시장은 워낙 걸린 얘들이 많아 협상할게 많다고 하는데 자동차 시장은 만들어 당국의 승인요건만 마추면 된다니 더 쉽게 생각할거라 생각됩니다.

재밌는 생각을 해봤습니다. 애플이 독자적으로 자동차를 생산할것인지 아니면 누구를 인수할 것인지, 아니면 적당히 아웃소싱해서 핵심만 먹을것인지. 가장 먹음직한 업체는 테슬라인데, 테슬라가 애플에 인수되려고 아주 노력도 많이했었죠. 내부 OS를 iOS로 바꾼다고도 하기도하고, 그런데 너무 커버린데다가(그래도 애플에게는 껌값이지만) 특허를 다 공개하는 바람에 돈 비싸게 들일필요가 없어 보이고요. 게다가 스마트가 시장이 급격히 열리지 않는다고 가정하면 지금은 연구개발 단계고 밑거름을 만들고 기달릴때지 성급히 시작할리 없다고 생각하면 테슬라는 더더욱 아닌것 같습니다.(사면 내년부터 내놔야 하는데 애플이 몇대 판다고 그만큼 투자하겠어요)

저는 아이폰 처럼 철저하게 아웃소싱 할것이라고 보는데, 누가 만들지 생각해보면 포드가 가능성이 많다고 생각됩니다. 아이폰을 중국에서 만들고, 칩을 삼성이나 TSMC에서 찍어도 고급으로 팔리는거 보면 누가 만드냐는 중요한게 아니지요. made in usa라는 상징적인 것도 있고요. 전세계 공장과 판매망도 있고. 포드가 경제위기때 bailout되지 않아 깔끔한 인상도 좋고요. 포드는 차체에 대단한 강점이 있지만 자동차 소프트웨어에 완전 뒷쳐저 있어서 둘의 필요성이 잘 맞아떨어집니다.

그러고 뉴스를 찾아보니,

애플의 자동차 부서 수장이 포드 엔지니어 출신이네요. 포드에서 컨셉카 만들던 사람도 애플카로 들어갔네요. 아플카 프로젝트 이름이 타이탄(Titan 옛날 트럭이름이기도 한데 ㅋㅋㅋ) 포드 옛날 차 모델 모양으로 프로토타입해서 쓸것 같다는 예상도 있네요.(미니밴 타입이라는 말도 안되는 예상이 초기에는 많았으나) 우리 MTP처럼 안팔더라도 테스트용 차는 필요할테니.

1월에 포드가 실리콘 밸리에 자동차 연구소를 세운다고 발표했는데, QNX하는 ㅅ끼들이 왠 실리콘 밸리에 세워 했는데... 이제 보니 잘 맞아 떨어지네요. 그렇게 말을하지. 주주총회에서 소리칠 뻔했네요. 뭐하는 ㅅ끼들이냐고. ㅋㅋㅋ

2020년형으로 팔것 같다고하는데, 2018년에 생산에 들어가겠네요. 이렇게 되면 포드 장기적으로 엄청 괜찮을듯. ^^ 그런데 함정은 애플은 한군데서만 생산하지 않겠지요. 애플카2는 현대에게 줬다가 애플카3는 GM에게 주기도 하고 이러는거 아닐지 몰라요.

Google도 더 바빠질듯. 퀄컴에게도 시장이 좀 빨리 열릴수 있고요.

삼성도 same soon 답게 자동차 만들어야 하는데 현대가 도와줄까 모르겠네요.

2014년에 미국에서 연비문제로 1000억원대 벌금. 벨로스터가 디자인이 참 잘나왔는데 뻥 연비를 붙이면서 완전 이미지 망쳤네요.

현대·기아차는 미국에서 2012년에 불거진 ‘연비 과장’ 논란과 관련해 1억달러(1073억원)의 사회적 배상금(벌금)을 내기로 미국 환경청(EPA)과 합의했다고 3일(현지시각) 밝혔다. 이를 계기로, 국내에서도 잇따르는 연비 과장에 따른 소비자 피해 보상 방안에 관심이 쏠린다.

Hyundai and Kia will pay a record combined $100 million penalty for overstating fuel economy estimates for many of their vehicles.

The South Korean automakers had already agreed to pay consumers for the difference in estimated fuel costs, when the discrepancy was discovered by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2012.

The civil fine and other penalties announced Monday are in addition to those direct payments to vehicle owners.

The vehicles involved were the Hyundai Accent, Elantra, Veloster and Santa Fe and the Kia Rio and Soul.

The automakers overstated fuel economy figures for their vehicles by an average of six miles per gallon, the EPA said.

The fuel economy figures shown on automobile window stickers are based on testing done by the automakers themselves. The EPA then tests about 15% of all models itself to ensure automakers are reporting accurate results.

Hyundai and Kia are both owned by Hyundai Motor Group. The two brands operate independently in the United States, but fuel testing is done jointly at a laboratory in Korea.

"Hyundai has acted transparently, reimbursed affected customers and fully cooperated with the EPA throughout the course of its investigation," said David Zuchowski, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America in a statement.

Hyundai also said that the difference between the EPA's fuel economy estimates and its own has to do with differing interpretations of the test procedures.

As a result of the fuel mileage discrepancy, the automakers also understated their greenhouse gas emissions by about 4.75 million metric tons over the lifetime of the vehicles. So Hyundai and Kia have also agreed to forfeit greenhouse gas emission credits worth over $200 million.

Automakers get greenhouse gas emission credits in exchange for exceeding goals set by the EPA. The automakers can then use those credit to offset emissions from less efficient vehicles, or sell them to other automakers for that purpose.

Hyundai and Kia will also spend about $50 million on measures to prevent future violations.

"We are pleased to have this matter behind us, and our priority remains making things right for our customers through our fair and transparent reimbursement program which remains in effect," Kia Motors America said in a statement.

The California Air Resources Board was also involved in the settlement and will receive a portion of the civil penalty paid by the automakers.
